Case study: Transforming counterparty risk management through contract intelligence

The challenge

Following regulators significantly increasing scrutiny of counterparty risk management practices across the banking industry, global financial institutions are expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of contractual rights, obligations, exposures and risk mitigants embedded within their legal agreements.

The Tier 1 global bank identified a strategic need to unlock contractual intelligence from a vast portfolio of legal agreements spanning Prime Brokerage, ISDA, CSA, GMRA and credit documentation. Critical counterparty risk data was dispersed across a large volume of legacy documents, creating operational challenges in onboarding, risk assessment, regulatory reporting and event-driven analysis.

The Client required a scalable solution that would:

  • Extract and digitise contractual data from legacy and newly executed agreements.
  • Improve counterparty risk visibility across Global Markets.
  • Support regulatory expectations around contractual risk management.
  • Reduce manual analysis and operational costs.
  • Create a sustainable business-as-usual process for ongoing agreement management.
  • Enable stakeholders across Legal, Credit Risk, Collateral Management, Prime Brokerage and Operations to access trusted contract intelligence.

Our response

Likezero partnered with the Tier 1 global bank to establish a comprehensive contract intelligence solution, transforming static legal agreements into structured, searchable and actionable data.

The programme began with Prime Brokerage agreements and strategically expanded to encompass a broader range of client types and documentation. Through a phased delivery approach, Likezero digitised and codified key contractual terms, clauses and risk attributes across multiple agreement types.

Business outcomes

  • Enhanced counterparty risk management: Risk, Legal and Front Office teams can now rapidly identify contractual rights, exposures and outlier provisions across counterparties, enabling faster assessment during market stress events.
  • Improved regulatory readiness: The Client established a robust framework for demonstrating contractual understanding and governance over key legal risk provisions.
  • Faster onboarding and decision-making: Structured agreement intelligence supports onboarding decisions, credit approvals and collateral management processes, providing faster access to critical information.
  • Operational efficiency: Contract analysis that previously required extensive manual review can now be performed through automated search, reporting and data extraction workflows.
  • Enterprise-wide accessibility: Contract intelligence is no longer confined to legal specialists. Business users can access trusted contractual data to support day-to-day decision making.

Technical outcomes

  • Automated inbound processing, digitisation and extraction of contract data from legacy and new agreements.
  • Structured XML and API-based data outputs.
  • Integration to internal data repositories and collateral platforms.
  • Agreement linking and relationship management.
  • Entity codification and counterparty mapping.
  • Advanced reporting and portfolio intelligence.
  • Contract deviation analysis against internal standards.
  • Scalable SaaS architecture supporting ongoing growth and adoption.
  • Ongoing BAU processing of newly executed agreements and amendments.

Looking forward

Following successful implementation and adoption, the Client continues to expand the use of agreement intelligence across additional business areas. The programme is evolving from a contract digitisation initiative into an enterprise-wide capability that supports risk management, operational efficiency and strategic decision making across Global Markets.
